Investing in LBGTQ-Friendly Stocks

While Socially Responsible Investing seems to go hand-in-hand with environmental protect and the limitation of oil/petroleum-based investments, there are a wide variety of worldviews and social issues that fall under that same umbrella. I'm currently on a massive research spree for my current job looking for ways in which different worldviews can be packaged and made to fit the mold for a variety of clients.

Since I addressed investments that would be appropriate to vegans, I thought I would share my thoughts on portfolios designed to help support and advance the causes important to the LBGTQ community.

The main difference here, is that instead of giving a laundry list of investments that boast particular product offerings, these investments are primarily the stocks of companies that have openly expressed support for the LBGTQ community and their causes.

After a 2013 case judgement by the US Supreme Court, federal benefits to married same-sex couples and 14 states legalizing same-sex marriage in the US have made this area of investment interest no longer a "fringe" idea. The companies mentioned below took these laws a step further by influencing Americans' attitudes by stepping up support for their own gay and lesbian employees. Domestic-partner employee benefits and event sponsorship are just a few of the ways these places have made strides to be all-inclusive to their employees.

No matter what you feel on the issue, there is no denying the numbers: gay and lesbian consumers make up a market of $790 billion in the US -- and clearly, one wants to be in on that kind of growth.

Motif Investing has created a portfolio of stocks notorious for their support of the LBGTQ community, and the growth on a year-over-year basis has been phenomenal: over 18.0% return in just last year alone. If you belong to or support those in the LBGTQ community, it's worth it to either consider investing in this portfolio, or re-create it yourself!
