Tech startups that employ Millennials have one pretty awesome thing in common: they keep a stocked pantry of snacks for hungry employees. It's pretty amazing, but several sources forecast that snacking will turn into a $375 billion industry worldwide. Why so huge? Well, 75% of the world eats snacks to satisfy hunger between meals, additionally 63% of the world's consumers snack for nutritional reasons. The later of which is the main draw for the Millennial crowd.
So yes, we get it, Millennials like to snack healthy so what does that mean for the future? Within the next decade, Millennials will have created a new generation of children (ewww) and will pass their snacking habits onto them. For one thing, this implies that the organic movement will likely make a massive shift to become the norm for future generations. If you have followed food trends, or watched my TED Talk, you know that the younger generations are majorly influencing food trends already.
Now when it comes to snacks, you may be wondering what draws Millennials to support a particular brand?
There are a few considerations here: firstly, nothing is too bizarre sounding for a Millennial consumer. In fact, the stranger the name and product itself the better, but it is important to be healthy. They are looking for a food experience with new and interesting flavor combinations. Along the lines of adventure, Millennials are more mobile when it comes to travel than any prior generation and often like healthy snacks reminiscent of hikes in the Andes Mountains or a study abroad experience in Japan.
Additionally, there is a new connection made when the physical world becomes heavily influences by the online world. Millennials do their research about products by reading up on them on their smart phones, rather than the nutrition labels. Social media has more of an impact on their decisions than any flashy advertisements in the store.
It's a random sector to think about...but that is what makes people money for the future. Use your brain and keep on thinking, "what would a Millennial do?"
